English Portfolio 2009

Starting with the In-class writing, the pieces here are samples taken from our in-class writing sessions we would have about every week or so. The teacher would give us an assigned topic and a time limit, and we were to write down our opinions and thoughts about the topic. These are the four samples I thought best showcased my ability and growth as a writer this year.

11/16/09 Analysis/Opinion of Movie (final)

For the movie review project, I am doing a review for the 2004 horror/thriller film Saw, directed by James Wan. Being his first directed movie, I can say that the film was a hit success, both in the box office and public opinion. Being a film admist a wave of cheap slasher/gore films, this film is a breath of fresh air from its genre and has enshrined itself among the classics such as Friday the 13th, and Nightmare on Elm Street. The whole movie tests your brain and is a thriller to see what will happen next. The film is composed primarily of flashbacks in chronological order and the pieces come together at the climax at the end of the film. However, its not for the faint of heart, and it is majorily based on opinion since it is a horror film. It's not something that will win an oscar for best film.

8/28/09 Shitty First Drafts (midterm)

1.) The thing that I found most surprising was how much the author struggled to get started finding an idea to write about. Being a professional author, she struggled almost more than I usually do in composing a first brainstormed draft.

2.) Our writing processes both relate in the sense that we both express whatever we think in our minds, and just jot them down as future reference. Also, it takes time for me to start composing a solid foundation in writing an essay, but once I do, its usually smooth sailing from there.

3.) Yes, I follow Lamott's idea of taking what other people say, or observing things around me to include in a writing composition. My ideas are not limited to just my own, that's one of the main things I incooperate in my literature.
