English Portfolio 2009

 Introduction & Bio

Hey!! I'm Brian Choe and this is my English 1105 portfolio. Throughout my English career, I had always thought of myself as a natural and skilled writer, but not much of an accomplished reader. Also, I never gave much effort in this subject because I always found it to be redundant, and uninteresting to me. This all changed upon my arrival to Virginia Tech. Adapting to the level of education in college and its demands allowed me to understand that everything must require effort, even the English courses I always dreaded. Upon completion of this course, with the help of my teacher and classmates, I became a better reader in general and was able to hone my writing skills and become a much more versatile writer with all the variety of assignments we did over the course of the semester. Just a brief description on how this was constructed, I arranged all the pages in chronological order in which they were supposed to be placed. The introduction is first, and the Movie Review finishes up the portfolio.

Beginning with the 4 In-class writing samples, I chose the Shitty First Drafts writing because being it the first in-class writing we ever did, I thought it turned out pretty well regarding the questions that were asked of that specific reading material. Lamott's struggle in starting a writing piece is also the same struggle that I go through. I thought because of the similar writing processes we shared, it was fairly simple to assess the questions. I chose Did you Know? because the video itself captivated me and because of it, I was able to understand its material and was able to write down the answers with confidence and viable supports. The Analysis/Opinion of Movie was in my opinion, the best in-class writing sample I did, primarily because it is constructed in a way that it is very brief, yet gives both good and bad sides of the argument. For the 2 thesis for advertisements, I believe this was the in-class writing that improved my actual essay the most, because I was able to derive a good thesis from the in-class writing relating to this subject.

Moving on to the blog posts, I first chose the very first blog post regarding the ideas of the visual narrative. I chose this because these ideas I had posted were the backbone of what I would base my visual narrative upon. The second blog post was the 9/30/09 reading " From Silence to Words" I chose this piece because out of all of the in-class writing and blog posts, it was the one where it best displayed my skills and capabilities as both a reader and a writer so far. The reading was difficult, and it took me a while to understand the whole literature in context, and it was a big stepping stone in both reading and writing for me. For the latter half, I chose My Advertisement, because I felt I was able to visually express the ad in its full context, and was able to describe the argument of the ad. The final blog post I chose was the Practice Movie Review, this assignment greatly helped me improve my skills on writing a review and was great preparation on writing the actual review.
